Macugen  (pegaptanib sodium injection)

Macugen is an intravitreal injection used to treat wet age-related macular
degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 50.
Wet AMD is caused by abnormal blood vessel growth that occurs under the central
part of the retina, known as the macula.  These blood vessels leak fluid, causing
rapid damage to the surrounding tissue and resulting in the destruction of central
vision.  Macugen targets and neutralizes vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF),
a protein that promotes blood vessel growth.
